But they cried out the more, saying, let Him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could not prevail, but that a riot was made, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this Just Person, see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His Blood be on us, and on our children. Then he released Barabbas unto them, and when he has scourged Jesus, he led Him to be crucified.

(Note: The Roman Catholic Church added a phrase called the "filioque" to the Creed here, which was one of the causes of the 1054 schism. The Eastern Orthodox Church maintains that nothing should be added or subtracted from the Nicene Creed which was sanctioned by the Seven Ecumenical Councils. The Roman Catholic Church uses "Who proceeds from the Father and the Son", when it refers to the Holy Spirit. According to John 15:26 - cited above, the Holy Spirit clearly proceeds from the Father, and together with the Father and Son is worshiped and glorified, as properly stated in the Eastern Orthodox version of the Nicene Creed.)
  • Acts 2:32 - Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we are all witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has shed forth this, which you now see and hear.
